CHAPTER 21

Having finished her dog-walking shift, Sarah hurried home to check on her pets and grab an egg salad sandwich, using part of the bounty Emily had brought over the night before. Emily’s egg salad was to die for. It was quite popular on the lunch menu. Emily swore it was simple enough that Sarah could make it, but Sarah knew that probably wasn’t true. Rather than try and fail, Sarah made sure her sister knew how much she appreciated care packages, especially ones with Emily’s egg salad.

Finished with lunch and knowing RahRah and Fluffy were settled, Sarah walked up the driveway from the carriage house to the property’s big house. She knocked on the back door that led into Southwind’s kitchen, but didn’t wait for anyone to answer before she let herself in. The kitchen was empty.

“Hey, Em,” Sarah called. “I’m here. Ready to go?”

For a moment, there was no response, but then Emily and Marcus entered the kitchen. Based upon Emily’s jeans and simple blue oxford cloth shirt that matched her chameleon blue-green toned eyes, she not only was ready to go, but ready to blend into the crowd observing Chef Bernardi.

Sarah looked Chef Marcus up and down, taking in his blue-and-white-striped balloon pants, Southwind white jacket, and orange clogs. She smirked. “Not joining us, I gather?”

“Why, am I overdressed?” Leaning against the island in the middle of the kitchen, the big man giggled in the way that always made Sarah laugh because it so didn’t match his mountainous size. Instead of the deep-throated chuckle she expected, his reaction to something funny was more like the sound someone who swallowed helium from a balloon made when they tried to talk right afterward.

“No way. There’s lots I can do around here that will be far more beneficial than watching Robert do one of his pastry demonstrations. I understand his advertised topic is ‘The Versatility of Pastry Knives. ”’

“Marcus, you’re kidding, aren’t you? Surely, considering everything that happened yesterday, he’s going to modify the topic.”

“I doubt it. Flexibility isn’t one of his strong suits. If it was, he might still be in business. He’ll gamble, which is another one of his passions, that he can get by with this. I’m not sure either of you are going to get much out of his demonstration.”

Emily kissed Marcus. “Maybe not, but I still want to go. It’s a way to see what’s going on in Jane’s Place. Maybe I’ll pick up some information or ammunition about Jane’s plan and the college’s reaction to it.”

“I doubt if anyone on Jane’s staff or from the college is going to talk to you about the proposal, even if you ask about it outright. We’re considered the enemy.”

“If her plan goes into effect,” Emily said, “we may be the wounded enemy. I may not learn any dirt, but it’s a good way for me to remind people about the Southwind Group’s existence. I’m not going to stand by and let them ruin our business. We’ve worked too hard to let Jane take it away from us.
